This year the Second Life® 14th birthday celebration (SL14B) was spread out across 18 full sims. It ended on June 25 and I spent several days poking around and absorbing all the amazing and wonderful builds, rides, art works, music events, shopping, immersive experiences and  just people watching.

As I explored, I took a few pictures to illustrate what I saw. So, here is a quick tour of a tiny sample of the hundreds of opportunities that were available:

  • The theme was called Carnivalesque and at the center of the 18 sims was this fantastic circus tent called The Cake Stage. The SLURL for this location was SL14B Pizzazz (18, 40, 25).
  • I discovered the Scary Tree by Jubran (qmanq Resident). The amazing art works in the background are by Suzen JueL Resistance (JueL Resistance).
  • I saw fantastic cityscapes like this one below right featuring the Bay City building by Marianne McCann
  • Finally, I had a fun experience at the Guitar Ride built by Catboy Qunhua. You get on a big musical note and fly around the giant guitar.

However this column is not about the birthday celebration but it concerns my ten year love affair with Second Life. In my decade here I have never lost my delight in exploring the mainland and islands that are SL. I get a thrill when I go to a new place and see how it’s laid out and what the buildings are like. This joy of discovery is new and exciting every time.

I remember a visit to the Burning Life sims early on in my SL journey. There I was walking naked across miles of barren desert and burning sand, trudging towards a giant wooden figure of a grotesque man who soon would be consumed in fire. I gathered with others, some naked, the rest in fantastic costumes, to observe the huge fire and to share in this unique, virtual experience.

I got the same feelings, except I was appropriately clothed this time, when exploring the SL birthday celebration sims. I cannot really describe the connection but it has somehow to do with something mystical that transcends pixels and moves SL into the realm of true human experience.
